Itinerary
Start your adventure with a breathtaking bus ride from Dobbiaco to Lago di Braies, an enchanting alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks and steep rock faces in the northern Dolomites. Marvel at the stunning scenery as you ascend towards the Forcella Sora Forno mountain pass. On your first night of the hike, you can choose to stay at Rifugio Bella or continue along a gently descending path to Rifugio Sennes, which is situated near the Senessee lake. Your choice of accommodation will depend on availability and personal preference.

The day begins with a descent towards Rifugio Pederu where a military camp used to stand during WW1. On your way, you will cross a lively mountain stream. You’ll either spend your night here or climb out of the valley to one of the two rifugios up there. The path gradually ascends through a valley enclosed by the surrounding mountain peaks. Upon reaching an elevated plateau above 2000 meters of elevation, you will soon be at your destination for the night, be it Rifugio Fanes or Rifugio Lavarella. They lie close to each other, near picturesque alpine lakes.

Berggasthaus Pederü / Rifugio Lavarella
The day’s trek commences with an ascent to the stunning Lago di Limo, setting the tone for the day’s adventure. Following a relatively flat trail across rocky terrain, you will gradually climb toward the Forcella di Lago mountain pass. The subsequent descent is steep and requires careful footing. You will then steadily hike up a rocky plateau before reaching Rifugio Lagazuoi, situated on a ridge at 2750 meters above sea level. Here, you can relish a panoramic vista of the Falzarego pass.
17.8 km and 1700 m of elevation gain / 530 m of elevation loss
As you leave the trail’s summit, you will traverse a terrain marked by the battles of World War I. Along the way, the path will take you beneath the imposing Tofana di Rozes mountain peak, and you will encounter tunnels and former warehouses. Eventually, you will arrive at the Falzarego pass, where you can catch a bus to Cortina d’Ampezzo, or choose to continue on foot through the valley. This option will take you past Rifugio Angelo Dibona and through Pocol, adding 10 kilometers to your itinerary.

This hike covers 38 kilometers with an elevation gain of 2700 meters, following the original route and culminating at the stunning Falzarego mountain pass (or Cortina if preferred). It’s the perfect opportunity for those wanting to discover the landscapes shaped by the events of World War 1 but unable to complete the full trail.
Although shorter and less challenging than the entire route, expect daily hikes of 4-6 hours across rugged terrain. This is a demanding hiking experience, not a leisurely walk.
We’ll handle your accommodations at traditional rifugios and provide support throughout the journey. Before setting out, you’ll receive a detailed written guide with a day-by-day itinerary and a precise GPS track of the planned route.
